Does FaceTime use data or minutes? Is FaceTime free?

What is FaceTime?

Does FaceTime use data or minutes? Well, first of all, what is FaceTime? FaceTime is a video calling service that is native to Apple devices like the iPhone and the iPad. It allows iPhone, iPod or iPad users to make free calls to any other Apple users over a connection or WiFi. On the iPhone, FaceTime comes integrated into the Phone app and can be easily accessed from there. On the iPod and the iPad though, it’s a separate app that comes as part of the native bloatware on purchase of the device. FaceTime can easily connect to any Apple user with an Apple registered email address or even simply a phone number. It’s basically Skype but restricted to Apple users.

FaceTime first made an appearance on the iPhone with iOS7 as FaceTime audio as a way to make voice calls over the same network.  Does FaceTime use data or minutes? Is FaceTime free?

FaceTime uses data and not your minutes. Here’s how it works. The app keeps track of the duration of your FaceTime call and based on the duration, a certain amount of data is expounded. For examply, if you make a FaceTime call for 1 minute, the app uses 4mb of your data connection. Does FaceTime use data or minutes? Is FaceTime free?

How do I know how much data my FaceTime uses?

That’s pretty simple. This feature is built into the app. With the increase in consumption of data, unlimited data plans have now become a thing of the past. Nowadays you have to keep track of your data consumption because video calls drink up insane amounts of data these days with the 4k videos and what not. So, it’s essential that you keep track of how much data your FaceTime app is siphoning away every day from your FaceTime calls. So, all you gotta do is:

  • Launch the FaceTime app.
  • Choose video/audio FaceTime. In the contacts list, you’ll see an i icon right next to each contact. Click on it.
  • This takes you to the contact and all your call history along with the data consumed. You can see whether it was an incoming or outgoing call, the duration of the call as well as the amount of data used for the call.

The next time you make a FaceTime call, make sure you come back and check up on the amount of data you blew on it. Does FaceTime use data or minutes? Is FaceTime free?

When I’m on WiFi, does FaceTime use my data connection?

No. Since your WiFi is preferred over your cellular data connection, FaceTime automatically uses the WiFi data and doesn’t touch your cellular data at all. Similarly, you don’t lose any of your calling minutes every time you video call someone on FaceTime.  Does FaceTime use data or minutes? Is FaceTime free?
